Penn Engineering Offers Online Certificate in Computer Science Essentials for Software Development
Beginning in April, Penn Engineering’s Department of Computer and Information Science (CIS) will offer a new series of online courses in software development as part of edX’s “Professional Certificate” program.
Students will be able to use the Computer Science Essentials for Software Development Professional Certificate to advance their careers and obtain a credential at an affordable cost.
“Penn Engineering Online Learning has created yet another new avenue of access to our outstanding faculty,” said Kostas Daniilidis, director of Penn Engineering Online and Ruth Yalom Stone Professor in CIS. “Software Development is a complex and growing field. We are proud to offer students the opportunity to learn about the intricacies that go beyond learning to write code.”
The Computer Science Essentials for Software Development Professional Certificate instructors include Chris Murphy, associate professor of practice in CIS and director of the Master of Computer and Information Technology program, Sampath Kannan, Henry Salvatori Professor and chair of CIS, and lecturer Arvind Bhusnurmath.
“In the past 10 years, the need for software developers has exploded in almost all industries,” said Murphy. “The goal of this series is to help learners transition from being able to write a program to being able to develop a high-quality software product.”
The four four-week courses that comprise the Computer Science Essentials for Software Development Professional Certificate include: Software Development Fundamentals, Data Structures and Software Design, Algorithm Design and Analysis, and Programming for the Web with JavaScript. Each course is offered free to audit learners and those wishing to earn a certificate will pay $149 per course.
