Robert Carpick Named 2017 MRS Fellow
Robert Carpick, John Henry Towne Professor and Chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, has been named a Fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS) Fellow. The fellowship honors those MRS members who are notable for their distinguished research accomplishments and their outstanding contributions to the advancement of materials research, worldwide. Dr. […]
Penn Engineers Demonstrate a ‘Hybrid Nanomanufacturing’ System
Nanoscale structures have properties that can’t be achieved in any other way, stemming from precise control over the structure’s composition and geometry. Unfortunately, simultaneously achieving high levels of control of both characteristics can be challenging. Bottom-up, self-assembly methods can carefully tailor the chemical makeup a nanoparticle, but are limited in their ability to control the […]

Penn Senior Lucy Chai Awarded Churchill Scholarship
University of Pennsylvania senior Lucy Chai of Acton, Mass., has received a Churchill Scholarship from the Winston Churchill Foundation. She is among 15 recipients of the honor, awarded annually to American students to fund a year of master’s study in science, mathematics and engineering at the University of Cambridge’s Churchill College.
A $14 million grant to improve mobility and safety in transportation
Penn, in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), is participating in a $14 million, five-year transportation research grant to establish a new national University Transportation Center (UTC) called Mobility21. The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) with the hopes of increasing both mobility and safety on the road. It is the third […]
Changchun Liu Receives 2016 W.W. Smith Charitable Trust Research Award
Changchun Liu, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, is the recipient of a one-year, $100,000 W.W. Smith Charitable Trust Research Award for his proposal titled, “A New Approach for Concurrent Detection of HIV Co-Infections.” Liu’s research interest lies in the interdisciplinary integration of microfluidics, microfabrication, mechanical engineering, biology, chemistry […]
Karen Winey: At the Helm of Materials Science
To excel in materials science research, you need curiosity about the microscopic building blocks of matter, and the creativity to design radical new properties on which to build the next technologies. Fortuitously, Karen Winey, TowerBrook Foundation Faculty Fellow in Penn Engineering’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), has a long-proven career in doing both. […]
Student Continues Family Tradition with Curling at Penn
Nearly 60 years ago, Cody Clouser’s grandparents were among those who founded the Philadelphia Curling Club in Paoli, Pa. Today, he continues his family’s legacy on the junior team, consisting of those age 21 and under, and also leads the next generation of athletes as president of the Curling Club at Penn. Clouser, a junior […]
Penn Researchers Shed Light on the Roundworm’s Curious Swimming Behavior
The round worm Caenorhabditis elegans, a nematode, is a puzzling creature. A previous study at the University of Pennsylvania established that, in some cases, these nematodes are actually counter-current and swim upstream rather than with the flow of liquid as a result of hydrodynamic forces. Another study indicated that they tend to accumulate next to […]
New Bolton Center Pigs Star in International Competition
Chester County Students Choose Swine for FIRST LEGO League Research Project The giant sows came up close, curious, some poking their snouts through the railings, as the eight elementary school students walked down the aisle, making their way through the enclosed barn. These kids weren’t there just to see the pigs. They were on a […]
